6 Winter Diet Tips for Cancer Patients, According to a Dietician

Winter brings unique challenges, especially for cancer patients. With treatments like chemotherapy and radiation suppressing the immune system, cancer patients are more susceptible to infections. Cold weather further increases the risk of secondary infections and makes managing nutrition more difficult. Dr Divya Choudhary, Chief Dietician at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC), shares valuable insights on managing winter diets for cancer patients. These tips are designed to support immunity, manage weight, and preserve muscle mass during the cold months.
Focus on Maintaining Ideal Body Weight
Dr Choudhary explains, “Cancer treatments often result in weight fluctuations—either gain or loss. A balanced diet is crucial for maintaining an ideal weight, tailored to the patient’s height and treatment needs.” Maintaining weight is especially critical during the winter months when the body requires extra energy to regulate its temperature.
Boost Immunity with Antioxidants
During winter, the immune system is more vulnerable to infections. “Chemotherapy and other treatments can reduce white blood cell counts, weakening immunity,” Dr Choudhary notes. A diet rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients—like vitamins C and E—can strengthen the immune system, reducing the risk of infections and supporting uninterrupted treatment. Seasonal vegetables, such as carrots and citrus fruits, are excellent sources of these immune-boosting nutrients.
Preserve Lean Body Mass
Winter often causes muscle loss in cancer patients, leading to fatigue and weakness. “Muscle loss due to poor nutrition can hinder daily activities and recovery,” says Dr Choudhary. To prevent this, patients must consume adequate calories and protein. Foods rich in protein, such as almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds, help preserve lean body mass, boosting strength and energy levels.

Incorporate Seasonal Green Vegetables
Winter is the time to take advantage of green leafy vegetables, which are packed with iron, calcium, vitamin A, and fibre. These vegetables, including spinach, mustard leaves, and fenugreek, help maintain healthy haemoglobin levels and improve immunity. Dr Choudhary advises incorporating these into soups, stews, or as a side dish to meals.
Include Immune-Boosting Spices and Roots
Dr Choudhary emphasises the importance of garlic, ginger, fresh turmeric, and amla during winter. “These spices and roots combat oxidative stress, helping the body recover faster and providing critical nutrients.” They can be added to warm teas or used in cooking for added flavour and health benefits.
Hydration and Appetite Management
Winter dryness and low appetite can make it difficult for cancer patients to stay hydrated. “Soups, room-temperature smoothies, and nutrient-dense broths are excellent alternatives to hydrate without discomfort,” advises Dr Choudhary. These liquids not only hydrate but also provide essential nutrients, helping manage appetite and ensure proper nourishment.
A cancer patient’s diet plays a crucial role in their recovery, especially during the winter months. By focusing on nutrient-dense, seasonal foods and taking steps to manage hydration and immunity, patients can support their recovery and maintain strength.
